Rogue One : Review-ish

I’m sure those who want to watch this have and those who don’t yeah. So I’m just going to plonk.

This movie vexes me. It was fun, and sort of worth the price of admission. But it gave me no reason to watch this, instead of The Force Awakens, or Empire. First all, I am sorry to all those who worship this movie. I just don’t like it ThAt much. Let’s start with the best part.

The universe. Yavin 4, Mon Mothma, all great to relive it. It is always nice to be in the Star Wars universe. It like the Harry Potter universe, even the owls are fun.

Now the problems.

“It’s dark and feels like a war movie.” No. Why? Cause it feels like fantasy. Worse bad fantasy. I think i’ve mentioned this before but every movie, and especially fantasy/scifi, needs to have rules. The OG star wars trilogy knew this. We knew that if Luke got sliced by a lightsaber, “the force” won’t save him. But this movie just throws that away. Take Donnie Yen’s character (idk his name). Why does “the force” save him from every single lightsaber blast. If that was the case why do we ever eVeR care when a skywalker all juiced up on midichlorians gets under blaster fire? The worse part is that it ruins the previous movies’ rules. The At-at. Remember how iconic and hard and amazing it was when Luke tripped the At-at? Yea. It takes 2 missiles in this one. So what, Luke Starhealer Universedestroyer Skywalker is a bad pilot? It vexes me. Why do i care about my heroes if the can dodge every single blaster shot? A war movie makes you feel every bullet, every bomb because we know the hurt and the repercussions of each one.

The plot is also so so messy. No actually it’s not. It’s just messily told. This is the first Star Wars movie with planet name cards.  There’s a reason for that. Everything was co choppily and messily set up. The pacing was way too fast at important parts and in the end I just gave up trying to keep track of the bigger picture and just think like a caveman. Oh masterswitch ah ok pull press climb. There isn’t any back and forth of battle. It just became a mess of globbed up action.

The biggest waste of potential however were in the characters. Star Wars took a big leap in trying to portray greyish characters. Sure we have had some glimpses of it, but generally this had the groundwork of some of the most unpolished realistic characters which adds a nice layer to this universe. BUT no. Sure it starts of with the ground work but nothing was added. The captain shoots a guy he does not need in the first act but is squeaky clean afterwards. The “extremist” Saw Gerrera isn’t that extreme, or is not shown to be besides a tentacle scene. The pilot got less explanation for the defection from the empire than finn did. Just why. WHy.

Forrest Gump : Review

Summary: 4.25/5. There's a reason why it's a go to feel good classic.

So i'm not going to tell you why you should go watch this movie because if you know anything about movies you know how good this movie is. Instead what i'm gonna do is just fanboy about this movie the whole way through.

So if you're a fan, just like virtually high 5 me. If you're a non fan, hope i can convince you  there shouldn’t be a need to. If you don’t know about the movie take my word and see it cause

Run Spoilers ahead run

The best part of this movie is no doubt the perspective that it adopts throughout the movie. Through the point of view of Forrest we get to see the terrible, cruel world in a naive, innocent way. It gives you a happy feeling and adds a layer of irony. It makes you think if you were more naive and didn’t well think so much maybe you’ll live an easier happier life. Forrest is also one of the most likeable characters in cinema history. He is so good hearted you feel so bad when his innocence harms him. He is aggresively inspiring, and he just pushes through all obstacles and always does the right thing, without hate or anger.

The events are also fun to experience, going through decades of events from the Vietnam war to the black panthers to watergate. Its fun to laugh at how Forrest is at the centre of all these events and oh i don't know how to explain it HES JUST SO MUCH FUN.

The thing is you begin to realise Forrest is an unreliable narrator. His perfect princess Jenny is a drug addict, and may have given him Aids and made him raise a kid that's probably not his and cheats his feelings. HUH but you don’t hate her, you appreciate her tragedy. Forrest is someone who was at the righr place at the right time doing the right thing. Jenny was at all the wrong places doing all the wrong things. Captain Dan is also much less heroic than portrayed by Forrest.

Sometimes you wonder if his story is the truth because it seems too cliched. Hugging Jenny in front of the white house. It just raining in vietnam until the gunfire starts. It makes you think how much of his story he actually experienced and how much he MAYBE watched on tv. JUST MAKES IT MORE FUN. Maybe he just imagined he was at all those places that he watched on the news??? Hmmm.

Movies are like a box of chocolates. But Forrest Gump is the most delicious one.

Birdman ANALYSED

Birdman in my opinion is the best crash course to cinematography. What i want to do here is something different than usual. Im gonna provide my theory as to the meaning behind birdman.
Heavy spoilers ahead. If you haven’t seen the movie go squawk away and watch it
From this point onwards of you haven’t watched the movie you will probably so lost you're gonna have a lousy finale that answers no questions.
So those that have seen the movie probably got pretty weirded out. Riggan has telepathy? He's Birdman? Is the long shot just stylistic flair? He flew away in the last scene? He shot himself? What? Yes my lad. I too was lost for along time (i thought about this movie for about 3 months so yes).
My general theory is that everything that happens in the movie is through how Riggan imagines his life. Its his thought. His imagination. Its his imagination combined with the real world. Like a kid who imagines two monsters fighting on top of buildings when he's on the road. Buildings from reality, monsters not so much. We see evidence of this like when he “flies” back to his studio we see him levitating and blowing up cars but ultimately we see a taxi driver chase him asking him to pay so we know he actually got there by the cab.
Ok, but what does this all mean?
Riggan, is a self centred person. He wants to be the star, he thinks of himself. That’s why we don't always get POV shots as if we were on a gopro. We get shots of his face, his expressions. That’s because at that moment he’s not thinking about what he’s doing but rather how he looks when he is doing something. Like when you’re walking down the street with a kind of flair you’re thinking about how cool you look and think about how others are looking at you. The long shot adds to this because this is how we see the world we don’t have cuts in our view of the world, we open our eyes and boom it's a long shot 24/7. This makes you think about how absolutely self centred he is at times. When he is scolding his daughter for taking drugs he is thinking about if he looks stern and serious instead of if his daughter is listening. This also makes you realise that Riggan isn’t as good as actor as he says he is. I mean the movie reinforces this a couple times, but when actors act they aren’t supposed to be them they are 100% their character. They don’t think about if they look angry they just are. (Just like how in the movie Edward Norton’s character has ed off stage but can get erect on stage cuz he is 100% just another character) This not so good acting makes you realise maybe Riggan was not meant to succeed and adds to tragedy because we know he just can’t make it.
What about all the Birdman stuff? As I said it’s all in his head. And have you noticed when we see Birdman it's always Riggan in the foreground and Birdman at the back? This is because Riggan is thinking about how he is facing his inner demon. So what does Birdman symbolise? To answer this we have to dissect what Riggan’s personality is like and what he wants to be. Riggan wants to be prominent and important. Just like how his daughter (Emma Stone) says he wants to be important and is afraid to be unimportant and forgotten. Riggan wants to be creative and new. Besides creating an entire production himself, the experimental nature of the play he produced is repeated many times, and he refused to do Birdman 4 because then it’s nothing new. Riggan wants to have power. This is basically the whole movie as things spins out of control and destroys him. So what is Birdman? Birdman is what he wants to be. Birdman was groundbreaking and new-experimental, Birdman can destroy buildings-powerful, and most importantly,Birdman is never forgotten.
Now what the hell was going on with that ending? To understand this one must carefully analyse the opening scenes. One, we have a quote before the movie starts “And did you get what you wanted from this life, even so? I did. And what did you want? To call myself beloved, to feel myself beloved on the earth.” Then we cut to him talking to his daughter. No. No we don’t people forget. We first see two burning streaks crashing to earth. Like a bird. Falling from the heavens. Then we have him fighting with his daughter saying that they don’t have the flowers he wanted. And then during the table read we hear that the character, who is a big failure (who is clearly a mirror of Riggan), “screwed up shooting himself in the mouth”.
Then in the end Boom. He shot himself in the face. The audience claps. The critic, who hates him, walks out. Then we get our very first cut in the entire movie. We cut to the same falling bird, now closer to the ground. A band, some jellyfish, some cosplayers, the stage setting, then boom the ceiling of a hospital. We get to see his wife, who he has had a strained relationship, waiting for him there. His best friend (Galifianakis) is happy for the first time. On tv we see that people all over the country are lighting candles for him. He gets a great review that says he is revolutionary. His daughter visits him, hugs him and gets him the flowers that he wanted. He goes to the toilet, sees he has a new nose because he “shot himself in the nose”. He look like Birdman. He jumps out the window. His daughter comes back and she looks down first, then up, as if her father flew up.
What? I know. Here’s my take.
He is dead. He is in heaven, or the place where he wants to be. He has all the things he wanted. Attention, family, love. But it's just impossible. No way there are vigils all over the country, he’s a washed up actor. No way he got a good review, the critic hates him. The lots of cuts is his life flashing before his eyes. That’s why there is a cut. But this is what he wanted. But then Inarritu also leaves it open and hanging. Did he really fail to kill himself? No. This is just an idea planted in Riggan’s head, that he imagined happened. Did the audience clap? Since it came before the cut? Yes. Riggan succeeded. He just gave up too early and barely got to see the fruits of it. He got what he wanted from this life. He was beloved.
The main rebuttal i have to this theory is that there were some scenes where Riggan was not there to witness, so it’s not in his head. THEY DIDN’T HAPPEN. ALL IMAGINED. This is proven by the two scenes Mike Shiner (Edward Norton) has with Riggan's daughter. When Riggan was jealous of Mike, the latter courted his daughter and got close to her. Later when he was on better terms with Mike, he imagined Mike saying praises about him to his daughter. This is something the real Mike just would not suddenly do. Inarritu masks this by showing a complex character but the genius of Inarritu wouldn’t leave plot thread like that loose and unresolved. Unless Riggan doesn’t care about it anymore and stops imagining it.
So what’s the moral of Birdman? I think the faintest lesson i got was that the pursuit of dreams is tough, if you abandon everything else and then give up before realising it, that is when you are a true failure. You don’t fail when shit hits the fan. You fail when you don’t try to dodge the shit. But that’s a personal lesson. I don’t think Inarritu meant for a lesson. This is a story about a man. Not a theme or an idea. A man whose life is just a mess and has the perfect downward spiral.
And it’s perfect.
HA! IT FITS DOESN’T IT. I THINK I FOUND IT. I THINK I UNDERSTOOD BIRDMAN!
P.s. about the hidden cuts in the movie, i think they are a visual metaphor too. In the first 45 minutes you can barely point out where Inarritu cuts to make it seem like a long shot. After that he uses some painfully amateurish obvious ones, getting more obvious as it progresses. Not because he’s a bad director halfway through the movie but because the low quality cuts show the deterioration of Riggan’s mind.

Birdman : Review

Summary: 4.8/5. This is an absolute masterpiece. The best film i have seen in my life thus far and undoubtedly a modern classic. If you want a crash course on cinematography and tone and characters, this film is the best case study.
Actors: Michael Keaton, Naomi Watts, Edward Norton, Emma Stone
Every oscar film these days does something few have or dare to. Boyhood is shot over 15 years. The revenant is shot in natural light. Birdman’s is the most impressive. The whole entire movie is a long shot. This means that it looks like there are no cuts and it's shot in one continuous shot. The beauty of this movie is that even the “hidden cuts” is a visual metaphor. If this isn’t the perfect use of cinematography i don’t know what is.
So what i want to do here is discuss the beauty of this film.
Slight spoilers ahead. Not much but i recommend completely clean mind when watching for the first time.
The story is that Riggan Thompson (Michael Keaton) is a superhero star that wants to direct and star in a play so that he can be prominent again. He puts everything on the line for it but it just seems to keep failing and failing with obstacles just thrown on. Poopoo hits the fan at lightspeed here. Meanwhile he tries to patch his life up with his exwife and hus daughter.
This movie is a film for film fans. If you don’t know what a long shot or how much effort it takes to take a long shot, your appreciation for the movie is...less. Another area where one's understanding of the movie increases is when you realise how absolutely pinpoint perfect the casting is.
Michael Keaton plays a man whose acting career is dwarfed by his one role as a popular superhero who set the stage for future superhero movies. His dramatic ability is unnoticed and he is fading into obscurity. THIS IS MICHAEL KEATON. After he acts as batman, the movie that is the definitive superhero movie, his other brilliant work goes unnoticed. This just shows how much effort inarritu took in making this movie. And Keaton’s performance is absolutely perfect. I don’t think a great actor is a description of Michael Keaton, Michael Keaton is the definition of an actor period.
Edward Norton also plays an actor who is great at his job but has an absolutely pricky attitude. There is no other way to describe him but as a top grade ass. Again, Norton is also an actor who despite his talents is an absolute ass BTS. In  the movies he screams “Amateurs all of you” to the crew, just like he did to the Incredible Hulk crew! At this point idek if they are acting or just shooting a reality tv show.
The direction is amazing in this movie, the long shot, the jazz track behind the whole movie, the acting, the dimmish lighting, all add to this dready, tiring feeling throughout mirroring the fatigue Riggan feels when everything goes wrong.
When Inarritu says that every beat is planned in this movie he’s not kidding. Perfect. Beautiful. Cinematic. Perfection.
One jibe i have with the movie is sometime you are pulled out of the movie because tou are distracted by the cinematography and just think “How in the world did he do that?”. But hey if there’s anything to pull you out of your suspension of disbelief, beautiful cinematography is definitely one of the better “distractions”
(I’ll write my theory in another post this is way too long)
Ok guys, go watch Birdman and come back and fanboy with me. Or just uk fanboy with me if you watched it before.
Click to the left or right or up or down for more posts. (Depends on what ur reading this with) byeeeee

Finding Dory : Review

Rating: 3.75/5. Great fun and death by cuteness. Comedy and heart lands perfectly but drama falls short of pixar classics. Characters also suffer from sequel-itis and are underdeveloped.
This movie is painfully overrated and overhyped. Now don't get me wrong it's a great movie and if you don't see it what do you live for but it's just not a Toy Story 3. So here we go….
The good. The jokes are great. The build up the payoff all good. You’ll be laughing a lot. I needed tissues.
The pace is really fast and it's a lot of excitement so it's also a fun adventure. There’s a lot well executed “chase” scenes which are fun.
The characters are really cute. So there’s that.
The bad. The characters are fun but for a pixar film they were really underdeveloped. Like for example the octopus, he mentions that he is scared of the ocean because of the bad memories he had there. Its his main motivation and fear. But we never get to know what happened that caused him so much trauma. Dory showed no arch besides i nnneeeedddd to find my paaaarents the whole movie. Marlin and Nemo echo a similar Ddddoooooorrrrryyyy. We don’t get much background or info on new characters and the old characters are terribly flat.
The aforementioned tissues also did not dry any tears of sadness. For the studio that gave us Up, the drama really fell flat. The scenes were either suddenly too intense and too unexpected or too long and dragged out. There was one scene that tagged my heart a tad. But that’s it.
Well, despite all its flaws Finding Dory is a pixar movie and it brings its standard quality of family fun. But if this is how they handle sequels we are about to have the biggest let down in history. (Incredibles 2 cmon man)

Now You See Me 2 : Review

Rating: 3.25/5.
Positive: Fun visuals. Fast pace. Knows not to take itself seriously.
Negative: Plot holes when thought of too much. Weak characters and archs.
I actually loved the first Now You See Me. I thought the twist was cool, the magic was fun and the whole movie was tight and a modern day Sherlock Holmes meets Ocean 11. Now give that sequel-itis.
In this movie, we have the Four Horsemen coming out of hiding and doing their tricks again. First it was to expose a corporate scam, but then they get kidnapped and after a series of events work for Daniel Radcliffe’s character. They try to steal a computer chip thing and cheenamajig they end up wanting to expose Daniel Radcliffe. See, not the tightest plot.
The best part of this movie was the “magic”. There were lots of cool visuals. If you saw the trailer you know they stop water and so on so forth. Plenty of fun to see them do it, and you buy into it, trying to figure out how they did it. The best scene was easily the cardistry scene and when you see it you know you want to watch it again, it’s just so fun. But...then again if you think about it too much, then it has huge holes..and...Basically you need to have just the right amount of suspense of disbelief for this movie. Too much, and you just see pretty pictures. Too little and the whole thing falls apart.
The acting...okay. Eisenberg does does Eisenbergisms and old man woody harrelson with his stuff. The weird thing is really the characterisation of some “ characters”. Like those who read anything about this movie probably knows woody harrelson has a twin brother...whose motivation is that his brother...dumped him to go solo...okay. Hes just a cartoon man. Just ugh. And daniel radcliffe also dumbest “smart villain” second only to lex luthor in bvs.
But again just dont walk into the cinema expecting a masterpiece in flim making. Close 1.75 eyes and you’ll have a great time.

50/50 : Review

Summary: Great movie that shows that sickness isn’t always the stereotypical full sadness or rainbows and sunshine. Like a better less teenage TFIOS, with better direction and better characters. And a really cute romance and broship.

In this movie we have Adam, a young 20 plus guy who gets cancer. His friend Kyle (Seth Rogen) , a therapist Katie (Anna Kendrick whoops) and his mom help him along this journey, while having not-the-best relationships either. Here we also have his girlfriend Rachael (Bryce Dallas Howard) which also causes heartbreak.

The best part about this movie is how it shows that sickness is a part of life. A sad part but it breaks all the cliches. You don’t meet the love of your life, your girlfriend cheats on you. Your best friend isn’t always supportive sometimes he just wants to get laid. They show the sad parts of sickness but they also show that it’s just like daily life It makes the movie have an authentic, relatable feel that feels much more grounded and emotional.

At the core of this movie is really the friendship between Kyle and Adam which is fun to watch with lots of laughs and great chemistry among the two actors. They do a great loner-outgoing pair and just adds comic relief in a way that fits in day to day life. Again very grounded movie.

We also have this awkward relationship between Adam and his therapist who is younger than him, but it plays out really cutely and is great fun to watch. This is especially so in a cute car scene which when you see it it makes you warm and giggly inside.

Adam’s relationship with his mother is also strained but portrayed in a non-cliche way, which again adds to the groundedness of the situation.

Ultimately in a movie about cancer, it really uses the horror of the sickness and makes fun of it but also really shows the way it affects everyone around the patient and the patient itself.

A great movie, with a grounded feel that makes you feel good and happy about life, in a non-cliche way. Beautiful.

London Has Fallen : Review

Summary: ⅗. Good action fun and nice camaraderie between characters but the cgi throws it off and the plot is sloppily resolved.
In this movie, Gerard Butler’ character saves the president again in a die hard style movie. It's similar to the original but just a whole larger scale.
The best part of this movie is the action scenes. Citywide destruction and huge set pieces. In the finale there's this long shot which just tracks the destruction and the whole scene was almost as good as the tank shot in dawn of the planet of the apes.
Gerard Butler’s character is the most fun being smart and physically awesome. Although at times he is a little bit too invulnerable, at least they tried to show him struggling. They also show the camaraderie between him and the president very well so it doesn't seem like just saving the prezzie but also saving a friend which adds more heart.
Despite this, the CGI is really horrid and the explosions are so unbelievable it throws you way off. And the resolution is...die hard die harder bad.
So all in all it’s a fun movie to just stuff popcorn but if you’re looking for a good plot just pop in die hard again.

Hello Hollywood : Save Our Superheroes

Hello Hollywood,

I am Darren and I really like superheroes and superhero movies. But I see that they’re in trouble so let me talk to you about it for a bit.

Focus on the characters

You guys remember Rocky right? You know that won an Oscar and why it’s a symbol of the American Dream? Why we cheered for Rocky and felt our hearts drop when Rocky didn’t win? Because we knew he was fighting against the odds, against people’s expectation. We knew how hard he fought and how much was at stake. We were invested with the character so we were invested in the fight. The same applies for superheroes. If we want the hero to win more than “so the bad guy goes bye bye” we root for him more, the emotions rise and fall higher. That’s why it hurt us when Captain America was punching Bucky. That’s why it hurt us when Black Widow has to fight Hawkeye when she is an aunt to his children. If you focus on the characters, those who don’t just want fights get a reason to watch your movie.

Make the villains good

As much as we want to spend time with our favourite heroes we also want to feel a sense of fear and hate to our villains. It makes it feel so much better when they are defeated. At the same time, we need to feel for this villain too. Threatening to destroy the galaxy is starting to get really underwhelming. If there’s tragedy with the character this leaves a bittersweet feel that makes it more interesting than good vs bad. Think of the most popular villains. Vader, Khan, hell even Loki, had a tragedy and a great plan. This is a perfect formula that few movies, ahem marvel, have not gotten. So please. fanboys want our heroes adapted well but we want our villains fleshed out as we dreamt it too.

Work different formulas

Superhero films have little change to their formula. Hero has troubles, fights villain but fails, and after regrouping and recovering there is a big fight where the hero wins. Try changing this up please. One great example is Chronicle, where a broken teen uses his powers not only irresponsibly but also turn evil when he is truly broken. The thing about powers is that it doesn’t always end with the good one winning. Look at our daily lives and you know we have crazy people with too much power. I appreciate what you tried with Civil War and Batman V Superman but in the end we still had a vilification and a goodness triumphing story line. Work with it. Let the villains win. Let the villains form a team (good job suicide squad). Let heroes be pitted against one another (Daredevil vs Punisher well done now go tell your Civil War brothers to feel ashamed). This also means some non comic book superhero films can be added which add a new taste to the series, don’t be afraid to fund them if they’re good!
If you can’t (or don’t want too), you can try to change the tones and genres. Like how Marvel did Phase 2 with a different genre each, like the Winter Soldier being a spy movie and Thor being a fantasy. If you guys do this well this fans get superhero movies of every type on screen just like the variety on paper.

Don’t rush a universe

Look. I get it. Universes mean money and money is great. And I love shared universes too. But don’t rush it. Build the characters, get people to like them individually. That’s how you get them interested to see more. Flashing lights on a cctv doesn't make me excited for the flash in justice league but knowing his character and powers would if he had a solo movie. That’s why deadpool was great. Cause they didn’t try squeezing in as many Xmen or references it just made us love the character.
Studios stop being selfish
Guys. Really. IDK how your profits work but causing your competitor to have a loss does not mean you win. A lousy Fant4stic isn’t better than a good Marvel Fantastic 4. If you guys can work contracts to have them all exist in the same universe, you guys split the profits and everyone wins. Look at spidey and how after all this time we are hyped for Spiderman again, earning both Marvel and Sony money. Money! Great isn’t it!

Stop spoiling your movies in your trailer

Guys. If people wanted to watch Batman V Superman or a Captain America movie, they would go regardless of trailer material. And if they didn’t want too they won’t. These movies are a brand and people just need to get a sense of the movie. You don’t have to show scene after scene, spoiler after spoiler. How cool would it be if we didn’t expect Vision and got him? That type of surprise gets people hype through word of mouth after release which works way better than just a shot of his eyes after the trailer. Showing an entire fight scene is just disrespectful. That could have been in the movie and enjoyed in a theatre. But no, you guys just had to tell people that there is gonna be a fight in the Avengers movie!!! Wow! Shocking!

Hollywood we live in the golden age of superhero movies. But if you don’t change and don’t change fast, we are all gonna get superhero fatigue and your precious million dollar franchises are gonna go bye bye. So please, for all of us, save our superheroes.

Cheers,
Darren Does Movies

Civil War : SPOILER review

Summary: 3.8999/5. Wonderful superhero film and Marvel delivers yet again. The characters get a lot of interesting development, and the plot is well planned and executed. Just goes to show what you can achieve with a shared universe done well.

Plot: A veteran goes against a broken cocky man in a tin can with a black cat and a teenager who learnt to shoot sticky white substance 6 months ago. Mid way through the movie, the veteran calls his gang of army bros and they cause a big ruckus at an airport.

Howdy there mates spoilers ahead

Basically, in this movie the UN wants to make the Avengers their standing army, to control them and use them. Cap doesn’t trust them because of hidden agendas and Tony thinks their a loose cannon that needs to be controlled. Meanwhile, Bucky reappears in Cap’s life and a hidden scheme is developed.

Again, let’s start with my favourite part of every movies, the characters:

This movie has done something that something that Marvel has been struggling to do. Set up a good villain. Baron Zemo is smart, and his diabolical plan is hidden but when it all ends it hits a big punch. His monologue showed his vulnerability and he was so well written. From the beginning his cruelty and smarts are shown when we are first introduced to him. We have him tricking a Hydra agent to let him in his house very slyly, and then he drowns the agent a sink to show his character. This just shows his entire character in one simple scene that makes him memorable unlike ahem, other ahem phase 2 villains. Then we have him get a “phone call” which seems very intimate yet he does not show any emotion, which hints that something happened to his family and that that is his motivation. Then we have the big reveal with a Daredevil level good monologue and we find out it’s a recording. Damn son that hits hard, and it perfectly shows his motivation. See DC!!! Not that hard to make a good diabolical villain is it?? If this quality of villains continue in Phase 3 then Marvel has solved one of their films biggest problems.

Next Blank Panther and Spidey, the new peeps. Blank Panther’s character is very well developed. He shows his power, his ability to fight and also his powers as a king. This is a great way to establish a character in a non-solo movie. Awesome fight scenes, with amazing moves. His powers as a king was hilariously and awesomely portrayed in him finding Bucky in a day when Shield couldn’t for 75 years and his threats to Bucky. His character furthers the theme where vengeance blinds the characters and he also shows how he is growing more diplomatic, just like his father wants him to, like when he didn’t continue to fight Bucky under the bridge but just unmasked himself instead. Spidey was absolutely perfect. He quips just like he should. He is young just like he should be. He is inexperienced, underestimated but strong and capable, just like he should be. Now i cannot wait for either of their solo movies. Oh yes and both characters were again perfectly casted, well done Marvel, Chadwick Boseman and Tom Holland.

Wanda (scarlet witch) and Vision. Hooof they definitely increase they punching power in both teams. But they don’t end there. They have an interesting discussion about power and identity which in less than 4 minutes shows Wanda’s fear of her own power (hulk got a counselling buddy) and Vision being unsure what he is. This can be seen as both film deepness but also for any popcorn eating movie goer (me). See DC!!! Not hard to be deep huh?

I must say even the absence of thor and hulk furthers their character. Thor is a responsible god now. And hulk is really scared of his powers.

Now on to the actual civil war. Like the war war and the commanders.

On the left side we have Iron Mannnn. You could tell from the beginning of the film that he was broken, lonely and guilty. He feels hurt about his parents. And his guilt led him to a break up. He is desperate for an answer and he gets one with the accords. He thinks that he needs someone to control him to guide him. And they don’t establish this just here but also in previous movie, Iron Man 3 and Avengers. You could tell his motivation and you don’t blame him. And this is what differentiates “He killed my mother!” from “martha!!” . Because you could tell that all this boiled up hurt and anger and guilt is just exploding t Bucky. Hell Cmon just wanting to kill someone who choked your mother and plummeted your dad seems like a reasonable excuse to be overridden with anger.

On the right side we have OMG Cappppp. You get all overlaying reasons with Cap too. Him feeling like the leader of this Avengers family, and he wants to protect them. You see him go from patriot to being painfully backstabbed by Hydra run shield which breeds his lack of trust (rmbr this being a major theme in Winter Soldier oooo development). Then you have him wanting to reconnect with his close friend Bucky which is established from the beginning of thee movie. Then you have this nailed home with the death of the love of his life. Great motivation. But one gripe. God damn Sharon Carter. Really. No. stop shoehorning romance, No. No. Ugh.

And with this they have an amazing clash of ideologies which are both justified. They made nerds and geeks all over the world watch a debate about power and authority dammit. Look at that. You could tell the reason for the fighting and this actually throws you in and makes you choose a side, being much more invested. Wooo debate woop. See DC! Make a smart movie that can be a film and a popcorn movie. Stop saying Marvel is ooo only about talking racoons and metal flying men. They have heart! And character! Not sloppily done mess of a “ooo look at me I am deep and insightful ooo”. Still angry.

And the war man. That fight scene at the airport is amazing. Wonderfully planned action which uses all the heroes abilities and was funny too. Oh Marvel, what did i do to deserve you?

Now. List of awesome moments. Giantman. Werrrp. Antman on an arrow. Werrrp. Spidey. Werrrp. Wanda friggin destroying vision. Werrrp. Ohk.

Now the cons.

Pacing was a tad weird, kinda slow at the beginning but again, still appreciate the effort for character development. Hawkeye and Scarlet Witch is also very awkward, with motivations weirdly unjustified. And the marketing was weird. It;s not even really a cap movie. Meh.

So, Civil War was great, great and great. It opens phase 3 well and sends ripples which have some really cool effects on the MCU. Fun!

Civil War:Trailer Talk

I want pictures of spiderman spiderman spiderman...oh, meh i guess

Hey guys! First trailer talk but it’s a great trailer to start. So let’s see this trailer and see if it sucks....ah who am i kidding i mean how awesome will it be. Please be a Winter Soldier, not a Thor, please. Marvel please. Do this justice.

Now let me talk about Civil War, the storyline. I am not an expert (yead h duh). I did not see all the comics but when i first started reading comics this was the first major storyline i read. And i loved it. The debate of individual rights versus the common good, and how neither side wins with war was beautiful. It shows how neither side is right but the “fight” is going to tear families (cry susan storm to those who know cry). I am hoping the movie can have the same great mirroring of the common world and use the story arch as a metaphor as efficiently (learn from zootopia guys). We see hints of the fight of ideology with government intervention and public outcry (“we need to be put in check. Whatever form that is i’m game” yesss) and how Captain America seems to be fighting for Bucky in an individual level just please make it good.

Now first, the focus on Bucky. Yesss. It’s great that this trailer shows that there is some, which is great cause this is still a Captain America movie and this arch needs to be settled. Plus sure, focus on Cap great. But this trailer shows that there are other things going on, other spotlights other than this. Great! That’s  why civil war is a universal crossover not a pair up Yaayyy!

Next, “New York” “Washington DC” “Sokovia”. Yes. Great heroes saving people and caring for people. And you can see how it affects characters. Great! Character building and distinct traits. Not just a bashing (ahem Man Of Steel), maybe the reason why they decide to fight in a empty airport but more on that later.

Next, T’challa. Ahahaha hes fighting Bucky all the time ahahah. Great that shows that he has great power and he also is a great black role model. Him crying also shows character development great. And a bulletproof suit and superhuman strength and speed yeees, do this well and we can do the Black Panther but also Cap cause so far they seem to have similar powers.

Next, Iron Man. Nooooo please do him well. They seem to be making Tony as the villain, making him too assholish and too pricky. Let’s hope they still keep the essence of the two right sides in the movie. And please don’t ruin the perfect likeable asshole ratio that is Iron Man please.

Next, the fight scenes. Ohhh yes please. What do i have to say they look great, like a great bashing of equal power and the Russos definitely have game so boom.

Next, Rhodes falling and the major bitch slap. Aww emotions great. Character great. Tension beyond ideology but bond great. This is what the MCU does well, an idea and a fight, but beyond that we have gods who are human amongst humans who play god. Yes.

Next, Scarlet Witch and vision. Great tension between lovers (yeah ofc they are) and also shows the equal fight. Their scenes are going to be the best i bet.

Next, Ant-Man fight scenes, on an arrow!!! Great iconic scene and great different action that we all loved on Ant-Man can’t wait to see more and see how they blend him into the 360 shot.

Next, Crossbones and Baron Zemo. Haizz. Make them play small roles or else. I mean the movie is so packed and to do justice by all the characters and stories give them time! As seen in Spiderman films, too much is too much, so please don’t cram.

AND FOR THE FINAL BOMB, spiderman. The suit is too cartoony for me but i think it’ll look fine in the movie it looks defines enough not like the power ranger suit we have now. And the eyes ugh dude too much makeup go swimming.

So! Civil War looks great and it probably will be Yay!

Zootopia : Review

Summary: 4/5. Great family fun movie, with great characters and great underlying criticism of biases in society. But the humour did not always hit and the ending was sloppily executed.

“Go back to the desert” “I’m from the Savannah”. That’s where I was sold. That sounds exactly like a racist bigot (aka Trump supporter) talking to a minority race, or a xenophobic man talking to a foreigner. And it’s little moments like that that grounds the movie in real life.

Ok guy, let’s be frank the whole movie the best part was the racist commentary. From the community telling you you won’t make it in certain jobs, to workplace discrimination, to everyone using race as the reasoning for a common unexplained pattern, to racial profiling, all of it fits so well and in a way that non racist parents can explain to their kids. This is fun but it is also deeper and makes a bold statement in a KIDS movie!

The animation was okay...

But the characters make up well for it. Judy Hopps! Really enthusiastic, really fun, very bright and she’s not dumb but she has flaws and needs help from...Nick Wilde! Classic slick character and great fun. He knows his way around the “underground” and he is street smart. The chemistry and the relationship is great! At the midway mark I was like make it love and i’ll kill you this is good, this is feminism at its best, this is great female empowerment for girls...and they didn’t make it a love relationship. Yessss.

Now, my only qualm. The ending, it felt like the twist was not strong enough to be a huuuuh, but it did not have hints to allow for "a i knew it" moment. And the villain made no sense, like oh get all predators killed and we are on top but we do so by making predators go crazy. That just does not fit into the great mirroring of society. It's not like racists are radicalising extremists to make everyone hate muslims. What?!

Overall it’s a great fun, and deep and enlightening movie that fell apart at the end but it well makes up for that.

The breakfast club : Review

The breakfast club:
Summary: 4.5/5. Good dialogue driven, fun movie that allows teens to see that they are not a stereotype but an individual. Although not laugh out loud.
I watched a dialogue driven movie on a plane with a small screen and horrid audio, with lines constantly cut short with announcements. And I loved every line, every scene and every character. That is the beauty of the coming of age classic The Breakfast Club.
The story is simple. 5 teens go for detention on a saturday morning. They have to spend a whole day at school, together. One is a basketcase, one a criminal, one a nerd, one a princess and one a sports jock. Through their interactions we learn more about who they truly are and slowly learn more about how they landed themselves in detention.
The good:
The chracters are real and extremely well thought out. They each have something inside of them that we see in ourselves. The boy that everyone expects will do nothing with his life is actually a kind and caring person. The person who is weird and quirky does weird things just so people will notice her. And this story is slowly fleshes out the characters, turning them from the various cliched stereotypes to people that are everything at once, that has traits from all the stereotypes. If there was a movie to show that we are not who we seem to be, this is it.
The writing is amazing. In its own clever quirky way it captures the character of each character, and explores more about all the characters in a natural way. It sounds exactly like “teenage talk”. Not the “lol lmao” that Juno gives us but the insightful dialogue that every teenager has somewhere deep inside.
The pacing is amazing too keeping tensiln throughout, and taking the viewer from sad to happy to glad in seconds very naturally.
The meh:
The acting...mmm...well theres a reason none of these actors are extremely well known now. Do they get the job done and deserve a paycheck? Yup. Do they portray the characters in their full beauty and ugliness? Mmmm...nope.
The set design was slightly too easy. Yes we only needed one school but so much more could be done to show the school setting, to show how the teens at that school treated these characters. Banners for prom queen. Signs for wrestling tryouts. Anything to further show how these characters are like as seen from other peers in the school.
It is also extremely unfair to call this a comedy becuase there were very very few scenes where i actually laughed out loud. It was fun and a great time, and i wore a smile the whole time but again the guy sitting beside me on the plane probably didnt even notice me laughing at all.
All in all this is a great movie for any age and hits especially close to heart for a teen. Sincerely, the breakfast club.
