Rogue One : Review-ish

I’m sure those who want to watch this have and those who don’t yeah. So I’m just going to plonk.

This movie vexes me. It was fun, and sort of worth the price of admission. But it gave me no reason to watch this, instead of The Force Awakens, or Empire. First all, I am sorry to all those who worship this movie. I just don’t like it ThAt much. Let’s start with the best part.

The universe. Yavin 4, Mon Mothma, all great to relive it. It is always nice to be in the Star Wars universe. It like the Harry Potter universe, even the owls are fun.

Now the problems.

“It’s dark and feels like a war movie.” No. Why? Cause it feels like fantasy. Worse bad fantasy. I think i’ve mentioned this before but every movie, and especially fantasy/scifi, needs to have rules. The OG star wars trilogy knew this. We knew that if Luke got sliced by a lightsaber, “the force” won’t save him. But this movie just throws that away. Take Donnie Yen’s character (idk his name). Why does “the force” save him from every single lightsaber blast. If that was the case why do we ever eVeR care when a skywalker all juiced up on midichlorians gets under blaster fire? The worse part is that it ruins the previous movies’ rules. The At-at. Remember how iconic and hard and amazing it was when Luke tripped the At-at? Yea. It takes 2 missiles in this one. So what, Luke Starhealer Universedestroyer Skywalker is a bad pilot? It vexes me. Why do i care about my heroes if the can dodge every single blaster shot? A war movie makes you feel every bullet, every bomb because we know the hurt and the repercussions of each one.

The plot is also so so messy. No actually it’s not. It’s just messily told. This is the first Star Wars movie with planet name cards.  There’s a reason for that. Everything was co choppily and messily set up. The pacing was way too fast at important parts and in the end I just gave up trying to keep track of the bigger picture and just think like a caveman. Oh masterswitch ah ok pull press climb. There isn’t any back and forth of battle. It just became a mess of globbed up action.

The biggest waste of potential however were in the characters. Star Wars took a big leap in trying to portray greyish characters. Sure we have had some glimpses of it, but generally this had the groundwork of some of the most unpolished realistic characters which adds a nice layer to this universe. BUT no. Sure it starts of with the ground work but nothing was added. The captain shoots a guy he does not need in the first act but is squeaky clean afterwards. The “extremist” Saw Gerrera isn’t that extreme, or is not shown to be besides a tentacle scene. The pilot got less explanation for the defection from the empire than finn did. Just why. WHy.
